Let us quickly understand what is Plywood?

Wiki defines Plywood as ‘a material manufactured from thin layers or "plies & quot; of wood veneer that are glued together with adjacent layers having their wood grain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another.’ There are many specifications under plywood based on the chemical treatment of the wood and the glue used to fix the sheets together. Plywood is available in multiple thickness ranging from 2 mm to 39 mm. The ISI specification for plywood is ISI:303.

Plywood is usually divided into two grades – MR grade and BWR grade. MR grade refers to the Moisture Resistance Ply, which is a regular plywood used for home interiors. It is also known as commercial ply that can be used everywhere – except in the kitchen and the bathroom.

BWR grade refers to the Boiling Water Resistance Ply. Also known as marine ply, it is used in kitchens and bathrooms. Almost similar to BWR, there is another grade of ply known as boiling water proof (BWP).

Some other types of plywood are Fire Retardant plywood, Flexible plywood and

Industrial plywood etc.

Plywood comes in handy for multiple uses and provides safeguarding against cracking,

shrinkage, twisting, and splitting. Due to this advantage, plywood is the most used and

preferred wood for designing home interiors. However, one needs to select and use the

plywood that suits the requirement best, and that not all types of plywood must be used

interchangeably.

How to choose the best plywood for your need?

While choosing plywood, one must ensure to keep in mind the following:

  • Check if the type of plywood being selected is suitable for the task to be accomplished.
  • How to Check plywood quality? Quality depends on the thickness and type of plywood being manufactured.
  • Ensure that the plywood sheets have the specifications marked properly, and that they match those claimed on the manufacturers’ site.
  • The IS specification number must be printed above the ISI mark, and the CM/L number (Unique Licence Number) must be printed below the mark. Additional details include plywood grade, thickness of plywood and the year of manufacture.
  • Another essential factor to consider is the quantity one has to purchase. An individual must decide the approximate quantity of the plywood sheets that may be used and its size.
  • Buying plywood without its application in mind will result in excessive wastage and ultimately lead to higher cost.
  • When buying in bulk, transportation plays an important role in deciding how many sheets can be easily transported depending on the location of the site from the manufacture depot.
  • Last, but not the least, once the quantity and quality of plywood is decided, one must research the market for the right manufacturer is to be selected and budget has to be considered. Selecting a manufacturer that is ISO 9001:200 certified and uses innovative techniques such as Alternate Extra Glue Line (AEGL) and provides ply that has anti-blending properties may seem to be a good start for shortlisting the checklist. IS:303 and IS:710 marks on the plywood are approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards after performing thorough Plywood Testing, that gives the assurance of the marine plywood grades. IS 303 indicates general purpose, commercial MR grade ply while IS 710 indicates marine grade plywood.

Thus, in essence, everything depends on individual needs and requirements because of the various choices available in the market and before investing, everyone needs to be very careful and updated about the product.
